Characterization, Treatment and Conditioning of Medium, Low, and Very Low-Level Waste

Contact person: marina rodriguez alcala

Objetives

It works on the physicochemical and radiological characterization of low and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) and very low-level waste (VLLW), including trace and ultra-trace elements. It develops new procedures to address the limitations of difficult-to-measure radioactive isotopes and non-radioactive hazardous materials contained in LILW, applying current procedures and developing new ones applicable to new types of matrices, new waste, and legacy/historical waste. Additionally, it works on the treatment and conditioning of irradiated graphite to meet waste acceptance criteria for final disposal and the conditioning of other radioactive waste and liquid organic materials (oils, greases, scintillation mixtures) and solid materials (spent ion exchange resins) in innovative matrices.
