Online course on positive energy districts and climate change adaptation

37.5-hour course

In recent years there has been an accelerated process of urbanization and rural exodus that has been associated with sharp increases in energy consumption, increased temperatures, increased emissions of polluting gases into the atmosphere, increased situations of energy poverty, social exclusion or labor problems. The literature identifies buildings, industries and transport as the main energy consumers in cities. In this context, energy represents a solution and a problem, since its uncontrolled use is necessary and represents the main source of pollution of the environment.

There are several solutions that reduce the negative impact of these cities and improve their livability, resilience and quality of life: Smart cities, energy communities or Positive Energy Districts. Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are those that have a net-zero annual energy input, net-zero CO2 emission, and walk toward an annual production of energy surpluses from local generation. But the implementation of these types of solutions entails a series of challenges and challenges. This process is complex and considers technical, environmental, social, economic, regulatory, legal or training aspects.

In this course the foundations will be given to define a district of high quality of life that is affordable for its inhabitants and that makes it possible to achieve energy, environmental and sustainability objectives.

The programme would aim to design, develop and implement training for the planning and dissemination of EDPs. The main sections of this course are based on the definition of nearly zero-energy buildings, the generation of renewable energy, the flexible distribution and storage of energy and the integration of ICTs contextualized with the management and governance aspects, adapting to the current climate context and the forecast of climate change scenarios, as well as the geographical, social, economic and infrastructure environments, that characterize each place.
