Reduced graphene oxide coating procedure against corrosion and uses of it
Abstract
CIEMAT has developed a coating procedure for corrosion-susceptible metal substrates, such as copper or nickel, which provides an effective protection in very aggressive media. The coating is based on a thin and conductive carbon bidimensional structure that allows the use of these substrates as current collectors in electrochemical devices such as fuel cells. It provides good thermal and electric conductivity, is a stable and efficient barrier at least up to 250ºC and has optoelectronic properties of interest for other applications. The procedure is based inan aqueous solution processing method, which is easily scalable, and can be applied to a wide range of sizes. This method is simple, inexpensive, sustainable and with low environmental impact.
What problems does it solve?
This invention is particularly useful for the protection of copper and nickel pieces requiring special protection against corrosion, due to their use in aggressive media and/or elevated potentials (up to +1.5 V). Electrode collectors, electric contacts in batteries, fuel cells, or any kind of electrode which requires stability against corrosion are suitable applications.
Benefits
• This method is simple and inexpensive. It shows a low environmental cost since it does not use organic solvents.
• It is scalable and can be applied to substrates with complex shapes.
• It constitutes an effective barrier against corrosion under very aggressive media applying voltages up to +1.5 V. This protection makes suitable the use of coated metals in fuel cells application.
• It can accomplish the highly demanding environmental regulations.
• The application of graphene oxide as a derivative of graphite in coatings for electrochemical applications allows a substantial reduction in the cost of components.
