Soiling tracker

Abstract

The system developed by CIEMAT registers the evolution of the soiling that exists on any outdoor surfaces such as optical surfaces of energy systems, optical devices or glazing. Depending on the soiling levels determined, this device notifies to initiate the corresponding cleaning processes. The system is fixed on the surface to be monitored and, once performed the programmed measurements, they are registered and sent by wireless. Due to its low electrical consumption, it can be powered autonomously or from an external source.

What problems does it solve?

In solar facilities are employed large surfaces of glass or mirror that are exposed to the weather and whose soiling supposes a loss of efficiency and reduction in light, thermal or power production.

Benefits

• This system registers the evolution of the soiling that exists on any outdoor surfaces such as optical surfaces of energy systems, optical devices or glazing.

• Autonomy: It is capable of monitoring soiling and warning or activating cleaning processes at programmed levels.

• Easy to handling: It can be portable and allow mobility within the facility.

• Easy-to-build and low-maintenance device.

• It can provide optical data of transmittance or reflectance of surfaces through a previous calibration at the measurement location.

Potential customers

This device can be used in photovoltaic installations, concentrated solar thermal plants, low-temperature solar-thermal panels (domestic hot water, space heating, cooling, swimming-pools heating, etc.), weather stations, glass-enclosed buildings, greenhouses, etc.

Therefore, as potential technology clients are considered companies in the sector of photovoltaic solar energy, concentrated solar thermal energy and building.
