Bifacial heliostat with reflective and photovoltaic technology

Abstract

CIEMAT has developed a new bifacial heliostat that combines the thermal use of concentrated solar radiation with photovoltaic generation from global, direct, diffuse and albedo radiation. Thanks to this combination, it is possible to increase efficiency and energy production per unit of surface area compared to conventional systems

What problems does it solve?

Thanks to this invention, there is a greater use of renewable energy as:

• Electrical energy generation in concentrated solar thermal power plants, through concentrated radiation to produce heat that later can be converted in electricity by turbines and, through solar photovoltaic panels, increasing their efficiency and the energy production capacity.

• Process heat to produce steam, to heat fluids or to carry out drying processes in industrial sectors where high temperature and electrical energy are required.

Benefits

• Its energy efficiency is greater than that of conventional heliostats.

• Diversification in energy production: Process heat generation to industrial use or to thermoelectric power and electricity generation through photovoltaic technology.

• Use of less space due to the solar photovoltaic panels are integrated in the same solar field surface. This advantage is beneficial to projects with limited space and try to maximize the use of available space.

Potential customers

• Industrial sectors that require high heat and electrical energy such as the chemical, food and textile sectors.

• Electric power plants.

• Data centers, hospitals, hotels and residential complexes, etc. that require cogeneration.

About the technology

• Technology at development stage (Pilot plant test).

• Technology patented. Patent jointly owned with the University of Granada

• Collaboration requested: License agreement/Commercial agreement with technical assistance.
