Device for measuring surface deformation
Abstract
The invention offers a new electronic system to be able to carry out the distributed measurement of surface deformation with high resolution for large surfaces and with a highly economical system. This system is based on a fiber optic interrogator. The sector that may be mainly interested is the construction of windmills, airplanes, ships or civil infrastructures that can easily embed optical fiber in their structures.
What problems does it solve?
The impact of structural deformations can affect the safety and structural integrity in civil infrastructures (bridges, buildings, etc.), other structures such as planes and, particullary, windmill blades where the measurement of material deformation is key to determine the fatigue of its materials and the load that can be applied, without damaging its structural health.
To do this, it is necessary to carry out regular and adequate maintenance of the structure, which implies the use of multiple sensors along the structure. The present invention allows simultaneous measurement along the entire structure and is also more economical than the devices that are currently used on the market.
Benefits
• Continuous monitoring, providing global information on the structure, not being necessary the use of stress sensor at a local level.
• Simple and low-cost manufacturing compared to any other solution on the market.
• It can be used in structures that operate at extreme temperatures.
• This device allows to verify any expansion or compression produced on the monitored surface due to the temperature changes.
• This device can be used on structures of any size.
