Method for locating and repairing faults in photovoltaic panels

Abstract

CIEMAT has developed a methodology that allows the detection and localization of partial interruptions between the cells of a photovoltaic module by analyzing the magnetic field generated by the current flowing through the conductive buses. This method stands out for being fast, cost-effective, and non-invasive, as it does not cause any damage to the solar module during its application.

What problems does it solve?

Solar module repair is presented as an alternative to discarding or recycling. One of the most common faults is the breakdown of the interconnection between module cells. When this disconnection is not complete, although the module continues to operate, it is at the cost of the loss of a certain power generation capacity.

The methodology developed by CIEMAT allows the module to be repaired by restoring these connections, reducing costs, time and effort in the detection of the existing faults in the solar modules.

Benefits

• This methodology can be used directly with the solar module operating exposed to the sun or with the solar module powered by direct current.

• Does not cause damage to the back of the module.

• This methodology is cheaper in comparison to alternative products currently on the market.

• This methodology is easy to use by any operator. It is not neccessary highly qualified personnel.
