Abstract
Patents are useful tools to measure the technological progress of the countries since they clearly represent the creation and diffusion of knowledge in the productive activity.
The objective of this study is to show through patent indicators the global panorama of technological innovation in the field of hydraulic and marine energies and their evolution, as well as offering a deeper view of the role played by the Spanish institutions.
To fulfill this purpose, patent documents were searched with Global Patent Index (GPI) in the European Patent Office (EPO) data bases.
