Abstract

This report includes the analysis of the methodology applied by the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, to undertake the Integrated Regulatory Review Service, the so-called IRRS missions. The strategic design of these missions provides an opportunity for the host country and peer review team members to share experience regarding technical and policy matters. In this sense the evaluation is focused on both the Government policies and the nuclear regulatory body procedures and practices.

The application of a method that integrates self-assessment and review makes it possible to combine the analysis of the adequacy of the national strategy on nuclear safety and of the efficiency of its regulatory practices, against IAEA safety standards. Its use not only facilitates the exchange of lessons learned among experts with extensive experience, but it also provides the opportunity for identifying insights for future strengthening of the IAEA safety standards and for the establishment of a knowledge base regarding integrated safety approaches.
