Abstract

The Renewable Energy Development Center (CEDER) of CIEMAT in Soria has become a full-scale living laboratory during last years. Several technologies of production and storage of thermal and electrical energy are available, connected into a smart grid, where experimental studies under real conditions can be performed. Within CEDER facilities, a biomass district heating is available to provide heating to the Center buildings, using the biomass obtained in the property in a sustainable way. This installation allows the performance of research studies, in which yield and emissions from different kinds of biomass can be evaluated under several operating conditions. The boiler that provides heat to the network has a moving grate with automatic extraction of ashes and it encloses a cyclone and a bag filter for the reduction of particles in exhaust gases before emission to atmosphere. It also incorporates primary measures for the reduction of NOx and it has the possibility of implementing secondary measures. The feeding to the boiler is carried out from a high capacity moving floor silo. In each building heat exchanger stations are included, sometimes working at high temperature (80-90ºC) and others at low temperature (40-50ºC), in order to evaluate different performance of the installation under different conditions.
